3T ARCHITECTS :: 283 RIVER STREET :: 518-618-0900

3t has an extensive and award-winning portfolio of large community-focused projects such as Mosaic Village in Cohoes, Sheridan Hollow Village, Clinton Ave. Revitalization, 160 Myrtle Avenue and the Bull Moose Club in Albany as well as the Innovation Garage and numerous adaptive reuse projects throughout the City of Troy.  Intentionally, the firm does not fit into a specific niche market, but is focused on making all of their clients’ visions blossom into life, while being sustainable and relevant for the long-term.

3tarchitects was founded by Scott Townsend in 2006 in Albany, and moved to downtown Troy in 2014. Geoff MacDonald joined the practice as a partner in 2016. Combining Scott’s Mixed Use & Multi-Family Housing experience, with Geoff’s in Higher Education; both bring their long-term experience and humor, to a company which works hard but knows how to keep things light within their open-plan office.  Focuses of the practice include the renovation and redesign of historic buildings and spaces, urban development, projects in higher education, and historic preservation (many of which obtain historic tax credits). The focus of their mission is to create spaces which are more energy efficient with longer life cycles, while maintaining a design sensibility that feels correct; which has current relevance yet is timeless. Each project, whether it is an adaptive reuse or new construction project, has a specific goal, but their design concepts always aim to maintain the historic integrity of a building or neighborhood while introducing contemporary aesthetics and amenities.  This approach results in an appropriately balanced blending of the old and the new.

The firm consists of a staff of 8, with 3 licensed architects. 3t has always immersed themselves within the neighborhoods they work and projects they work on. Because of this,  they seek to use their design solutions to find the best solutions in addressing the needs of those communities. Mosaic Village is a highlight project for them, as an affordable living complex supporting individuals with developmental needs (including services on site homed within a co-working space designed specifically for them). Scott is excited to be involved with community committees in Downtown Troy as well, such as the initiative to rehabilitate Franklin Street Alley.

When 3t moved to downtown Troy in 2014, they created an intimate yet efficient design studio within two storefronts located at 283 River Street (the Dauchy Building). One space was formerly vacant, while the other was a travel agency many moons ago. The firm gut renovated the combined 2,600 feet space and added stairs down to the sub-basement to utilize as much of the space as possible. The basement houses an overflowing interiors library and staff kitchen. Their office is a prime example of blending contemporary design within a historic building and neighborhood.  You may have passed 3t’s office on upper River Street, without knowing who they were. But the more closely you look, the easier you’ll see their mark throughout the Capital Region and they are excited to call downtown Troy their home.
