ESPIRIT SALON :: 160 RIVER STREET :: 518-274-1068
Who knew that a change in a career path would lead to a successful 40 year entrepreneurship for Espirit Salon owner, Michael Nofal. Born and raised in Troy, NY, Michael went to Albany Business College for Marketing and Business Management. After a few years in the field, he realized that it was not for him. A friend who was a hairstylist saw his creativity and hands-on skills and suggested that he take courses in Cutting and Styling. Michael enrolled in Six Month Program. Training also in Midtown Manhattan once a month for Twelve weeks, in a fast-paced wash, cut and go “factory” school, Michael learned to have a quick eye and sharp skills for any type of hair or client. His fondest memory from this program, where his teacher from Japan walked up and down the line of styling chairs observing expertly and repeating his most quoted phrase, “If it doesn’t move, cut it off!”
Work came immediately after studies were completed and the rest is history. Throughout his career in Hair and Styling, Michael has worked in different sized shops, both managing and cutting. He finds moving up to own his own salon, a dedicated clientele and a solo by-appointment only operation (currently open 4 days a week) suits his current working style very well. It took 10 years to build up his clientele. Now it is less about building, but keeping a happily steady pace with the business.
Espirit Salon’s first location was on Fulton Street, then moved to 5th Avenue, where Minar Indian Cuisine is currently located. For the past 15 years it is in its current location at 160 River Street. The space was formerly a hat shop at the turn of the 1900’s. The owner of the building, who also owns the cabinet shop next door to the salon, mentioned the available space and Michael quickly moved in. Only having to move in chairs and hairwashing stations, the space retains a feel of years past, with a familiar, calm and welcoming environment.
The clientele frequenting Espirit Salon are professionals, country club members, and customers who want a classic, natural look. Michael has worked with all types of clients; cuts, colors and styles, but has maintained a repertoire of trust which keeps clients coming back. He uses only Goldwell and Redken products and goes to annual conferences for hairdressers. Walking away learning even just one thing new, is worth the experience.
The true mark of a successful small business owner and neighbor, especially in Troy, is not only longevity, but the long-term connections they make. Michael has become good friends with many of his clients, receiving invitations to attend celebrations, weddings, and parties. This is something he has never expected, but encompasses what he enjoys. His business may be in Hair and Styling, but his passion is giving back to his community. Michael volunteers extensively, with the Rensselaer County Historical Society (serving as Co-Chair of their Gala for the past 10 years) and is the President of the Board of The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company; and volunteering with Joseph’s House and The Troy Saving Bank Music Hall. Espirit Salon provides all that Michael is passionate about, he is able to walk to work in Troy, organize events in the community and give back, and give his clientele a great experience and look that is earned with years of trust and his expert skills.
